School Council and Roles of Responsibility

At Brightwell we have are proud to have pupil representatives that take part in School Council meetings.  These councils are in place so that pupils have a voice and are involved in decisions about the school that affect them.  Through School Council all pupils have the opportunity to raise issues, share ideas and take part in discussions that involve all of their classmates in reaching a democratic solution. Pupils at Brightwell know that this is their school and their thoughts and ideas matter.

The council is made up of the following roles:

  • Year 6 House Captains (one for each of Red, Blue, Green and Yelow House)
  • Year 1 - 5 class representatives
  • Sports Captain
  • Eco Champion
  • IT Captain

Our Year 6 children are also our WOW ambassadors as part of the Living Streets Walk to School Programme. Their key role is to champion all things WOW in their class and across the school, encouraging other pupils to walk or travel actively to school. They may also assist with recording journeys on the WOW Travel Tracker and take the responsibility of awarding WOW badges at the end of each month.

What is WOW?

In Term 6, our Year 5 children are trained to facilitate and lead activities through the Active Leaders programme - the following academic year, the children are then able to run small game activities during breaks and lunchtimes for our school community.

School Council elections take place every year.

Children in Years 1 - 5 prepare a speech which they deliver to their classmates, who then vote democratically for the person they would like to represent their class!

Our Year 6 children submit a letter of application for their roles of House Captain. It's always a very nervous wait to find out who has been selected!
